Happy World Book Day 2024 Everyone!!
What a wonderful day we did have!!
Everyone arrived with their FAVOURTIE book and couldn't wait to share the authors they love - some children even had the same authors!! It was so interesting to hear the lovely conversation about all the different books they have each read and even recommendations along the way. Some children wanted to swap there and then!!
Some classes enjoyed the Footy Booky Quiz and/or the Live Lesson on CBBC Pop Up Library - what fun it was to be included within such a modern interactive resource.
The children enjoyed their special lunch of All Day Breakfast and Tropical Lollies!!!
During Book Talk today - most classes looked at their favourite books and authors and got the children to discuss why this was their favourite book and give recommendation to others to read some really good books. It was phenomenal.
Thank you for all taking part in this special event - Remember to Read your way!!
Mrs Heyes (Reading Lead)
We have launched OPAL today. The children had great fun with the chalk, music and football for Year 1 & Year 2. The children were also allowed to mix across the front and back playgrounds.
The children were covered in chalk, but they created some amazing art work!
Today, in our assembly we were joined by some very important people. Megan and Tammy from Solihull Council came to announce the winners of our dog fouling poster competition. Councillor Maggie Allen and Councillor Alison Wilson gave the winners a certificate and voucher.
We then went outside onto the High Street to put up the winning posters. The children also stencilled messages on to the pavement outside school to promote responsible dog ownership.
We were delighted with the poster entries, Megan and Tammy found it hard to pick out the winning entries. Well done everyone!
Let's hope that dog owners pick up after their dogs.
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are about to launch our exciting new project to make our playtimes even better, in conjunction with Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) CIC.
In 2018, OPAL won the best active schools’ programme in Europe award and has been cited in two parliamentary reports as delivering outstanding practice. OPAL is working closely with Sport England to promote more active childhoods, which is one of the many reasons we are improving our playtime, as well as to improve opportunities for socialisation, cooperation, coordination, resilience, creativity, imagination and enjoyment for your child.
We strongly believe that: “Play is freely chosen, personally directed, intrinsically motivated behaviour that actively engages the child. Play can be fun or serious.
Through play children explore social, material and imaginary worlds and their relationship with them, elaborating all the while a flexible range of responses to the challenges they encounter. By playing, children learn and develop as individuals, and as members of the community.” (Children’s Play Council 2001). OPAL is based on the idea that, as well as learning through good teaching, your children also learn when they play. As 20% of their time in school is playtime, we want to make sure that this amount of time (equivalent to 1.4 years of primary school) is as good as possible.
On Wednesday 24th January, Peterbrook had a visit from Daniella and her lovely dog Rolo (not a real dog!) Daniella is the education officer from the charity Dogs Trust, and she visits schools across the country sharing important information about responsible dog ownership and safe behaviour around dogs. Key Stage 2 enjoyed an assembly and Y3 had the added bonus of workshops. We'd all like to thank Daniella for her visit.
We held our PTFA Christmas fayre on Friday the 1st of December. The fayre was packed with stalls, rides, raffle, refreshments and of course Father Christmas paid us a visit too.
Thank you to everyone for your support, we have raised over £1600 for school.
A special thanks to our wonderful PTFA for their hard work organising the event. Also, to our brilliant staff who helped out at the fayre.
Congratulations to our Y6 cohort of 2023!
We are delighted with our KS2 results, especially our secondary ready percentage, (reading, writing and maths combined). Peterbrook children were 9% above the national figure and 12% above Solihull.

Peterbrook Reader Unite,
Thanking all parents and carers for the many, many photos we received to support our wonderful display - showing how much we love reading at Peterbrook. You really did go above and beyond, and we appreciate your efforts enormously. Keep reading!!!!!
Parent Council was excited to arrange two Dine in Days at the end of September for Reception parents and carers to enjoy with their children.
Dine In Days give parents and carers the opportunity to join their children at school for lunch, letting them see how the lunchtime routine works and getting the chance to sample the menu!
As always the children loved showing their grown-ups where to go and what to do in the dinner hall, and chatted excitedly with their grown-ups and their friends over lunch.
Thank you so much to all those who were able to attend and to all the Reception children for being such amazing hosts. We really appreciate everything the kitchen staff and lunchtime assistants did to make everyone feel welcome and answer any questions.
Here are a few of the comments we received from those who came along:
“My children loved that we were there to enjoy lunch with them. It was a lovely thing to be able to do.”
“I loved seeing how my child chooses and gets his own meals and to see how he interacts at lunch time.”
“Lovely to know where he goes to eat, the set up, the dinner ladies always around helping the children.”
“[I enjoyed] seeing how the staff interacted with the children. Children being excited about spending time with us.”
Our Peterbrook children have been working on a surprise mission recently with Parent Council…
Parent Council members have been visiting classrooms over the last few weeks and asking the children to decorate hearts to thank their teachers for their kindness, help and support during this academic year. The children produced so many beautiful hearts with warm messages, artistic pictures and creative designs to show their gratitude!
At an assembly on 24th July the cards were given out to teachers following a talk about expressing gratitude and feeling thankful. Cards were also given to classroom assistants, as well as Mrs Thorne and Mrs Burke. We’d like to thank all the children for their amazing efforts on this project. The end results were absolutely brilliant and we’re sure the teachers will love what you created for them.
We would also like to say a huge thank you to Claire Le Vallois who will sadly be leaving Parent Council this year. Claire has volunteered for Peterbrook for many years as a Governor, Parent Council member and also as a Reading Volunteer. Claire has helped to drive forward so many positive changes at Peterbrook through her work on Parent Council including the Reading Volunteers programme and the outdoor reading area, along with supporting annual events such as Dine In Day, the Parent Questionnaire and Teacher Appreciation. Claire will be missed and we are so grateful for her time, enthusiasm, dedication and inspiration over the years. Thank you, Claire!
