Parkridge Centre Trip
Today, Squirrels and Foxes classes enjoyed a trip to the Parkridge Centre in Brueton Park, Solihull. Here’s what we did.
We heard all about the different types of trees in the woods. We hunted for certain types of leaves and matched them to the trees they had fallen from. We used mirrors to look right up into the tree canopies, and even hugged some trees! We made bark rubbings using paper and crayons.
We went pond dipping. We used a net to make a figure of 8 in the water and see what we could catch. Then, we took the net over to the table and carefully emptied out the contents into a shallow tray of water. We had a reference sheet to look up what we had caught – midge larvae, water boatmen, fresh water limpets and even young newts were some of the creatures we discovered. When we had finished, we made sure all of the creatures went back safely into the pond.
We learnt all about different kinds of minibeasts and went on a minibeast hunt. We found so many different kinds including worms, slugs, woodlice, beetles, flies and a big moth. And while it’s not a minibeast, the froglet we caught was very exciting to see.
To encourage us to continue protecting and helping wildlife at home, we made our own seed bombs. The recipe involved compost, flour and wildflower seeds, and a little water to bind it all together. I hope they bring some wildlife to your gardens at home!
We all had a really great time and learnt an awful lot about British wildlife and woodlands.
LEGO workshop
Today, we were lucky enough to take part in a LEGO workshop! Jack came to show us how to build a simple model, then to make it move by using a program on the i-Pad. We had great fun making our fans move in different ways, and we even made them move to music!
Paper Art
We worked together in groups to make these models of trees. We used different methods to shape the paper, including, rolling, folding and cutting.
History
We have really enjoyed our history topic this half term, all about toys! It's given us opportunities to find out about toys from the past as well as share our very special toys from home. Here are a selection of the things we brought to share. Thank you to everyone who sent or brought in a toy for us to look at - this really brought the topic to life.
St James' Church Visit
Today, we went to St James' Church to take part in 'A Journey to a Stable'. This was part of our R.E. topic and brought the story of Christmas to life. We sat by a fire and cuddled sheep while listening to a story, learnt about the gifts the Wise Men gave to baby Jesus, made a star and looked at how we celebrate Christmas. The volunteers also acted out the story and there was a real baby too! We had a great afternoon and the children were wonderfully behaved!
Welcome to Squirrels Class
The children had fun painting their self-portraits - can you spot who's who?
