Welcome to Year 5 Hawks!  We have such a lot of progress this year and it's hard to imagine that we are nearly ready for year 6 already! We are working hard in our maths topics and we have recently covered statistics and decimals. We are currently studying angles and shape and are confident in our ability to identify acute, obtuse and reflex angles throughout the school. Our weekly arithmetic test scores show that we have developed strategies to cope with the demands of year 6. Our teacher is very proud of our efforts.

Our writing focus is character development which we have based on the story of a monster terrorising a village, deep in the woods. The skills we are learning will be of great benefit to us when we start year 6 in a few months time! Our guided redaing sessions have focused on predicting what might happen in suspense stories and some of the ideas we have come up with are really creepy and terrifying. This should help us with planning our 500 word story for the BBC competition which we are planning to enter again next year. 

In PE, we are improving our cricket skills with a coach who comes in each week to help us with our batting, bowling and catching. We have a tournament coming up soon and we really want to do our best when we play against other schools. In French, we are learning about our families and how we describe our family members . We are learning about Islamic empires in History and the growth of the city of Baghdad, where the House of Wisdom was situated. It's interesting to find out how maths and science were also developed during this time in the Middle East and how ideas travelled along the Silk Road.

We have learned about life cycles in Science and how gestation periods in mammals differ based on the size of the animal. Did you know that an elephant's typical gestation period is 22 months?

We are using the crumble app in computing to create computer programmes designed to respond to commands. It's very exciting and we are all experts by now!
