Year 1 Snow Day Learning Tasks
9th January 2026
Below are some activities that you can do together during today’s snow day. We encourage you to get outside and spend some time playing in the snow together if you are able and it is safe to do so. Hope you have some fun! From all the Year 1 team.
Snow activities:
Maths:
Complete the starter and exit quiz from this link: https://www.thenational.academy/pupils/programmes/maths-primary-year-1/units/counting-to-and-from-20/lessons/counting-forward-to-20-and-back-from-20/overview
Questions to ask:
How do you know (10) is the answer?
What comes before or after (13)?
What is the biggest number?
What is the smallest number?
Discuss together how you worked out the answer together.
Reading:
Curl up somewhere warm and read a book together. Choose your favourite book or a book you have not read for a while.
When you have read the book talk about the characters, the setting, the problem and the solution. The children are used to seeing the pictures below when doing this in class together.
Writing:
Get a clipboard and a pencil and sit so you can see out of a window. What can you see?
Write a list (draw pictures too if you wish to) of what you can see. Remember to use segmenting fingers when writing words (sound out words you are unsure of and use one finger per sound in the word) and write what you can hear. Can you see any of these: snow, tree, path, swing, sun, cloud or grass?
