At Peterbrook Primary School, we believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage is crucial in securing solid foundations that children will continue to build upon throughout the school. It is our intent that the EYFS children will develop physically, verbally, cognitively and emotionally whilst embedding a positive attitude to school. We believe that all children deserve to be valued as an individual. Through working in partnership with parents we aim to encourage independent, happy learners who thrive in school and reach their full, unique potential.
Our flexible EYFS curriculum is carefully designed at the beginning of each new year to take account of the children’s individual needs and different starting points. Through a thematic approach, we aim to provide a play based curriculum that promotes all areas of learning and offers memorable, diverse and rich opportunities and experiences, which enhance and excite their learning. Our learning environments, both inside and outside, are stimulating and exciting, and relevant to the needs of our children. We believe that we are developing the whole child and throughout the phase, children will receive opportunities to develop independence, social skills, respect, a sense of responsibility and resilience.
Whilst attending Peterbrook Primary, we aim to ensure children have hands on experiences through which they develop their understanding and application of our school values and successful learning skills. We see the importance of encouraging our pupils to interact with the world around them and develop their ability to manage risks in a safe environment. We want children to have the opportunity to be able to explore and learn outside throughout the year, experiencing the seasons and changing nature around them. Throughout our outdoor curriculum we provide opportunities to allow the children to develop their interpersonal skills, to build resilience and for them to become creative, critical thinkers, to confidently face the world of tomorrow.
The EYFS classes have their own enclosed outdoor area. Being outdoors offers opportunities for doing things in different ways and on different scales than when indoors. It enables the children to explore, use their senses and be physically active and exuberant. We plan activities and resources for the children to access outdoors that help them to develop in all seven areas of learning.
