SC: I understand the terms: translucent, transparent and opaque

  • I can test materials to see which material would be best for curtains.
  • I can use the results to draw simple conclusions.

We need to know what material would be best for a pair of curtains.  Talk about what a curtains job is?  What properties would be best?  Talk about the words: opaque, translucent and transparent. (look at powerpoint) Which would be best for curtains and why?  Think about the word 'opaque'.

Look at the equipment and materials.  Equipment and Materials suggested: Felt, dark material, light material, dark material, netting, clear plastic, cardboard tubes, torches.

Get the children to think about how they could test to see which materials would be the best for a curtain.

Children to make predictions as to which will be opaque.  Then carry out the investigation and discuss results.

Equipment and Materials suggested: Felt, dark material, light material, dark material, netting, clear plastic, cardboard tubes, torches.
