School Council 'Hiruni Non-Uniform Day': we celebrate each year to support Hiruni and her family in Sri Lanka
Happy Hiruni Day!!
It is a year since we introduced you to Hiruni Sashikala who is now 6 years of age and who lives with her mum and her best friends in Udamulla, a village in central Sri Lanka about 30kms from the capital city Colombo.
Last year our School Council members decided to undertake a long-term project on global citizenship and they contacted the ‘Lions Club of Sri Lanka’ via a member of staff (Shirantha Gunawardene) with a view to sponsoring the education of a needy child for a 10 year period. In March 2008 we held our first ‘Hiruni Day’ – a non-uniform day to help sponsor the financial costs for Hiruni to go to school until she is 16 years-old. It was an incredible opportunity for us to help improve the life of a small girl presently living under very difficult circumstances in her village. Hiruni and her mother were delighted and ‘honoured’ to be chosen by our school for financial support. We continue to raise money every year to continue to support Hiruni.
