During the last two weeks after recycling we have completed our environmental review. We were asked to discuss a number of different questions which related to our school grounds and our job as eco-councillors. We discussed the following areas during our meeting: biodiversity, energy, global citizenship, healthy living, litter, the school grounds, transportation, water and waste.
We voted fairly on each issue and discussed how we could improve in these areas as a school. We agreed that there were a lot of positives and were interested by the different things each year group had to say.

Today Miss Belcher explained that we are having our Eco assessment on Monday. She explained how the assessment works and what our role would be. We spent our meeting reflecting back on our role throughout the year and what we had achieved!
We discussed that we regularly complete recycling and litter picks, we discuss Green Day activities and we help write our Eco action plan. We spoke about the fact we asked for a gardening club and we wanted pumpkins to be grown in the garden – which they are! We talked about our focus on water this year and how the pond is now attracting wildlife (we have spotted 3 frogs so far!). We also discussed our special Green Day which focused on water and ways in which we can preserve it.
Miss Belcher thanked us all for our hard work this year! We are looking forward to showing off all of our hard work!
Present: Miss Belcher, April, Chloe, Tia, Sophie, Laila, Sarah, Pippa, Jamie, Demi-Leigh, Daniel, Jahaan.
Absent: Joseph, Adham, Oliver and Ben.
Date: Wednesday 24th May during assembly.
Today we went outside and completed a litter pick. Year 5 had previously completed a litter survey as part of their science topic and they identified the problem areas for us. They found that the front playground and the fence line on the field were the worst areas.
We worked together as a team in order to clean up as much of the litter as possible! We did really well, Miss Belcher asked us to pass on a message to our classes when we returned asking children to remember not to drop litter as it is bad for our environment!
Let’s see if we can reduce the litter in our school!
Present: Miss Belcher, April, Chloe, Pippa, Laila, Sophie, Sarah, Jamie, Demi-Leigh.
Absent: Joseph, Adham, Joe, Daniel, Jahaan, Tia, Ben and Oliver.
Date – Wednesday 5th April during afternoon sessions.
Today’s meeting was called to discuss a project that is possibly happening near our Eco-garden. Miss Belcher explained that currently this project is not known by the other children in the school as it is still in its planning stage but she wanted to find out some of our thoughts and ideas.
We came up with some fantastic suggestions which Miss Belcher will take forward to the next planning meeting. Some of the suggestions include: a canopy, fruit trees, wellington boots storage, a class set of waterproofs, tipis and lots more! Hopefully we will be able to reveal more to you all soon, as we are very excited!
She also reminded us that it is Green Day on Friday and that we are focusing on water and how we can preserve it. She was also very happy to hear that some of us were going on a bug hunt this afternoon – hopefully it went well, Miss Belcher would love to see some pictures!
That concluded today’s meeting.
Present: Miss Belcher, Joseph, Adham, Joe, Daniel, Jahaan, April, Pippa, Laila, Sophie, Demi-Leigh, Tia and Sarah.
Absent: Ben, Oliver, Chloe and Jamie.
Date – Wednesday 15th February during assembly.
Miss Belcher explained that today’s meeting was to discuss the issue of litter in the school. As eco-councillors we have also noticed an increase in the amount of litter on our school playground.
Our first discussion was about how the wind is blowing litter from outside our school inside our school. Miss Belcher explained that sadly this was out of our control but we could control the clean-up of the litter. She explained that Year 5 has currently been completing litter picks on a daily basis and this seemed to have helped reduce the litter dramatically. She has suggested creating a litter pick timetable for each year group where children can come and collect the litter pickers and help in the reduction of litter in our school. As eco-councillors we decided this sounded like a good idea and may help in stopping children from littering! She also suggested that we could make it into a competition to see which the best year at cleaning up our school is.
We decided that as eco-councillors we will do a big litter pick at least once a half-term to help with the reduction. Miss Belcher said she will discuss all of this with Mrs Thorne and the other teachers. She also discussed how she was still communicating with the school’s caretaker about bins.
This was only a very short meeting as we had to complete our recycling for the week! Miss Belcher thanked us for our hard work and contributions and said she will feed back to us at our next meeting!
Present: Miss Belcher, Joseph, Adham, Joe, Oliver, Daniel, Jahaan, April, Pippa, Laila, Sophie, Demi-Leigh, Tia and Sarah.
Absent: Ben, Chloe and Jamie.
Date – Wednesday 9th November during assembly.
In today’s meeting we completed our environmental review. We were asked to discuss a number of different questions which related to our school grounds and our job as eco-councillors. We discussed the following areas during our meeting: biodiversity, energy, global citizenship, healthy living, litter, the school grounds, transportation, water and waste.
During our discussion on biodiversity we discussed that as a school we look after a number of different animals and have encouraged wildlife into our school during IPC lessons (for example year 3 created a bug hotel!). It was clear that as a school we enjoyed this area and we have already expressed an interest at doing more to improve this!
Our discussion on energy highlighted that we were turning off switches when they were not being used and as eco-councillors we were checking that this was done every time we left the classroom. We did discuss that children were not allowed to turn off computers or monitors but the teachers should be ensuring that they turn them off at the switch before they go home. We also discussed that the teachers cannot control the heating and so there are times when windows need to be opened when it is to warm. Miss Belcher has said that she will discuss this with the school’s caretaker as well as the energy meter.
As a school we have recently started a new scheme of global learning, this is where we discuss important issues which affect our country or lives. During these sessions we learn about different countries and discuss issues such as global warming. We also have a green day which focuses on Fair-trade at the start of the year.
We spoke about our school’s healthy eating policy during break times and lunchtimes. We discussed that not all children were following the rules and Miss Belcher said she would bring this to Mrs Thorne’s attention. Miss Belcher explained that during the new year we would be learning all about healthy living as a part of our PSHE topic – healthy me. She also discussed that we would be learning about being food smart (this is a Change for Life initiative).
We felt as eco-councillors that we could do more in terms of eliminating litter in our school grounds mainly to do with the amount of outside bins we have – Miss Belcher said that our next meeting will be focusing on litter as we need to start doing litter picks regularly. We also discussed that our school grounds are used every day by children and we would love to have more lessons outside (Miss Belcher explained that at this time of year it may not be possible due to the weather but in the spring and summer term she will remind teachers of our outdoor learning space!).
As eco-councillors we have noticed that although a number of children have now started to walk or ride their bike to school there is starting to be an issue with the cars that park across the road in the garage and down side-roads. As our school is on a main road we do not have an issue with cars directly outside but there is starting to become a problem with parking in these places – Miss Belcher said that Mrs Thorne is already aware of this and a letter will be going out about this to remind parents.
Water and waste were two areas where Miss Belcher had to discuss with the children why our school is unfortunately unable to say yes to some questions. Although we have a water butt and reuse our water bottles, we have installed water hippos previously and due to how old our school’s piping system is, they flooded our toilets and so they had to be removed. Miss Belcher explained our next green day focuses on water and said that we are having a lady from Severn Trent Water come in to speak to the whole school. Miss Belcher suggested that she may be able to speak to this lady about anything else we could do as a school to reduce our water consumption. We are very good with our recycling and we would like to recycle more! We cannot however, have a compost bin as our last attempt at this attracted rats into the school grounds and had to be removed immediately.
Miss Belcher thanked the children for their participation and discussed that these were valuable insights into what the children thought about how we could improve our school. That was the end of our meeting.
October Minutes!
Present: Miss Belcher, Joseph, Adham, Joe, Oliver, Daniel, Jahaan, April, Pippa, Laila, Sophie, Demi-Leigh and Jamie.
Absent: Ben, Tia, Chloe and Sarah.
Date: Monday 17th October during assembly.
In today's meeting we focused on introducing our new members to our team and explaining our job roles to them. We also decided on some of the issues we would like to focus on this year. Miss Belcher explained that for the current (old) members of the Eco-council that this would be their last year as Eco-councillors as other children would like to have a go! She also told us about the fantastic job we have done over the years and that we should make this year our best work. We also had our pictures taken so that the website could be updated.
Miss Belcher asked us how we thought the current recycling on a Wednesday was going and we replied that we thought it was going well and we are finding new ways to get quicker and more efficient every time! We have decided that one of the issues we would like to look into is the different things that we could possibly recycle as a school such as plastic milk bottles! We also discussed how we thought the litter picking went last year and we discussed the different issues that we had such as other children following us onto the back school field whilst we are trying to litter pick. Miss Belcher agreed to look into ways that we could address these issues and reminded us that we need to do a litter audit soon to see where litter pickers need to go!
We also highlighted that we would like to encourage more wildlife into the school and Eco-Garden such as birds. We felt that we could do this by creating different habitats for wildlife and possibly setting up a feeding station. We also discussed what we would like to see grown in the garden next year - we all expressed an interest in Pumpkins being grown and possibly creating a school competition to see which class creates the best Jack O lantern for our Halloween Disco!
We said that we would like to enter a competition if possible this year so that we can show off all of our hard work as a school; Miss Belcher said she would look into different competitions for us and she would update us in our next meeting. We thought that if we entered a competition we could also plant flowers outside of the main reception and possibly create hanging baskets for the gazebos.
That concluded our meeting.

18th April 2016
Present: Mrs Edwards, Ben, Oliver, Tia, Heather, Daniel, Pippa, April, Lauren, Laila, Sophie, Lauren, Ava, Demi-Leigh, James, Ajshe-Blue and Sam
Today we met up with Wellies 2 Bellies to learn how to plant and manage the garden. First we learnt that the best soil for planting was called 'loamy' soil. After that we started turning over the soil in the bedding areas and removing the weeds. This was a lot of hard work and took most of the day. We then added compost to the beds and mixed it in with the soil that was already there. Throughout the day, we planted onions, potatoes, carrots, herbs, parsnips as well as flowers. We collected lots of worms to put in our compost - this was a very slimy job!
In the afternoon, Daniella taught us how to compost which was very useful! We learnt that you have to have 1 part brown to 2 parts green. Brown included shredded paper, leaves, cardboard, tea bags etc and green included weeds, grass and fruit skins. We started the compost off and will continue to do this in the future.
I also gave Daniella the winning sign for the ECO-Garden which was designed by Ben Malloy in 3R! Well done to Heather from 2H and Riel from 3R who were the runners up. Mrs Thorne had a hard time judging them! Below are the 3 designs - the winning one at the top!

Children welcomed and register taken
Mrs Edwards explained to the children that our green day assessors will be coming on the 27th February so over the next few weeks, we will be doing work towards the Green Flag.
Mrs Edwards explained that Mr Barton had a concern that therecycling was being put in the main bins instead of the recycling bins. One child said that she didn’t know which bin to put them into so we explained the correct bin. The children said that it is very difficult to empty the recycling boxes as a lot of trimmings, fruit cores and pencil shavings are put in there which makes it difficult to keep the carpark tidy. Mrs Edwards said that we would do an update in assembly to remind staff and pupils what to put in the bin.
Jade expressed concern that when she was tidying the P.E. cupboard, she saw some children who were not ECO councillors in the junior carpark. Mrs Edwards explained that the only children to do the litter picking were the ECO councillors but they were allowed to pick a friend to help them. Mrs Edwards reminded the children to tell the office staff when they go into the junior carpark.
The year 5 and 6 children then took the walk to school charts and worked out who needed the January badge and counted them into envelopes. They didn’t finish so Jade and Isabella came at break and lunch time to finish them off. Mrs Edwards will put them in the registers tomorrow morning.
While the year 5 and 6 children were doing that, Mrs Edwards and the other councillors talked about the ECO code and all the work we have already done for it.

8th January 2013 Laila Checketts, Sophie Edwards, |
Mrs Edwards welcomed the children and wished them a happy new year. We started by looking at the litter picking rota and the recycling rota to check that it was still okay. Sam and Dan decided that they did not want to do litter picking at lunch time so we chose some other children to do it. Mrs Edwards will update the rotas.
Mrs Edwards handed out new walk to school charts to those who had not returned the last set. Mrs Edwards explained that the children would not be allowed to have their badges until the filled in charts had been returned.
Mrs Edwards shared the Action Plan for the Spring Term with the children. They were very excited at the thought of another Green day and were happy with the other actions. Mrs Edwards explained that we are still waiting for the assessors to come out so that we can gain our Green Flag. Mrs Edwards also said that we would be doing another assembly update very soon.
The children said that a lot of their teachers were making the effort to switch projectors off at lunchtime. Mrs Edwards suggested that when they have ICT, they make sure monitors are switched off at the end of each lesson.
The children were unsure of our ECO code so we went through it again to refresh their memory.
The children were very concerned again that it takes a long time for the taps to switch off in the junior block. They were also angry that in both the girls and boys toilets people are putting rubbish in the toilets and throwing wet tissue paper on the ceiling. Mrs Edwards said that she would talk to Mr McGaw and Mrs Thorne.
Katie and Hannah asked if Mrs Edwards could help them get their brownie Environment badge. Mrs Edwards said she would look into it.
Meeting closed at 9.30am |
20th November 2012 |
Mrs Edwards opened the meeting by giving out the posters that they designed a few weeks back, reminding staff to turn their lights and projectors off when they are not being used. Mrs Edwards asked for the children to stick their poster in a prominent place.
Katie was concerned that her class still didn't have a recycling box. Mrs Edwards found one and gave it to her class teacher.
Mrs Edwards explained that there would be an ECO stall at the Christmas fayre. There would be a 'guess the amount of seeds in Lottie' and a 'Guess the weight of the cake' competition. Prizes to be confirmed.
Mrs Edwards said that this would be an ideal opportunity to spread the message to parents and the wider community about how they can help save the environment. The children designed posters with clear messages on, for example, have shorter showers etc.
Meeting closed at 9.30am |
13th November 2012 |
Mrs Edwards had a couple of notices to discuss with the children. One is that they were not to look through or keep anything that they find in the recycling boxes and also that litter picking is not to be done on the field if the grass is wet.
Mrs Edwards then discussed the Green Flag with the children and explained that in order for us to be awarded the Green Flag, we would need to show that we have helped another school on their 'ECO' journey. Mrs Edwards told the children that we have linked up with our French school and that they would like us to send them a questionnaire to fill in.
The children spent the rest of the session thinking of questions they would like to ask the French school about what they do for the environment. Meeting closed at 9.30am |
16th October 2012 |
We started our energy watch today. We designed posters to help the teachers in the school remember to switch the projectors off at lunch and home time and the lights when they are not needed. These will be laminated and given out to each class.
Jade and Isabella wrote an update for next weeks assembl about our findings from our environmental review.
Mrs Edwards explained that there would be no ECO meeting next week but that she would collect all of the October Walk to School wall charts in and get the badges ready for when we come back. |
2nd October 2012
Demi-Leigh Andrews, Katy Duffin, Katie Adams, |
In September, we started our 'Walk Once a Week' scheme. Today we collected all of the wallcharts and counted how many people needed a badge for walking once a week.
Caitlin assured me that her class's wallchart would be in that day and Isabella couldn't find her classes as Mr Russell is away on a residential. Mrs Edwards said that we would do 6R when they came back!
We then distributed the badges and new wallcharts for October. Meeting Closed at 9.30am |
25th September 2012 |
Mrs Edwards explained to the children that we need to complete this years environmental review. The children were split into 3 teams to do this. One team did a bin and litter audit, one team went to ask the site supervisor, Mr Barton, some questions and the other team went and stuck up posters to advertise this weeks green day and harvest festival. The team who did the bin audit expressed concern that the litter was very bad in the nursery grounds so they are going to start litter picking in that area this week.
When the children returned, Mrs Edwards reminded the children that we would be collecting the walk to school charts next week and to make sure they have been completed. Meeting closed at 9.30am |
18th September 2012 |
Mrs Edwards introduced our parent representative today: Mrs McIlkenny. The children told her about all the wonderful things that we have done in our school to help the environment: recycling, litter picking, green days, growing our own vegetables, going on an energy trip to Orbit Housing and lots more.
Mrs Edwards shared our action plan for the Autumn term today and told them what we have planned for the next term, in particular, an assembly to remind children of our ECO code, making sure teachers turn projectors off before lunch and home time and helping our international schools become more ECO aware.
We then sorted out new ECO rotas for recycling and litter picking. Mrs Edwards will give a copy to each child, the office and will put on the ECO board and website.

11th September 2012 |
This was our first ECO Meeting after the holiday. We welcomed our new year 1 and year 3 ECO Councillors.
Sarah Lardener, who works at Solihull Council, came in to our meeting today to talk to the children about what ECO schools is and also how we can get our green flag. It was a really good reminder to the children for what we are wanting to achieve. We will talk further about the Green flag in next weeks meeting.
We briefly talked about the recycling jobs that will start on Thursday.
