Ecolé des Turbaudières,
Cholet, France

Peterbrook Primary School is proud to be able to develop its curriculum activities with schools across the world. Our children are able to benefit from educational twinning links with schools in France, Sri Lanka, Sweden and the People’s Republic of China and have benefited also in the past from undertaking international projects with children in Romania, Belarus and the U.S.A.

Friendships have grown with the children, teachers and parents from Ecole des Turbaudieres and prior to that with Ecole Saint Exupery in Cholet. Although we are many kilometres apart, we have worked together for the benefit of our school families via the ‘magic’ of the Internet.

With Ecole Saint Exupery, an amazing project was completed in 2003 - it was called ‘Oath to the Stars’ - and it was very exciting for those children involved from the three project schools in France, Romania and Britain. In June 2003, forty Year 6 children from Peterbrook performed their ‘Act’ from the three Act opera, which was funded by the European 'Comenius' budget.

Our then Headteacher, Mr. Carter, and our then music co-ordinator, Mrs. Curren, visited Ecole Saint Exupery in Cholet, from 5-7 February 2003 to launch the project and meet those other teachers involved from the participating schools. It was a wonderful visit when the final plans were laid and agreed regarding the staging and performing of this extraordinary musical experience.

~ ’This is an excellent opportunity for our children to learn more about the cultures of France and Romania and it is an honour for us to represent Britain' ~

Mr. Carter, project launch.

Cholet has a town population of 55,000 people and Ecole Saint Exupery is named after a famous French author who wrote the famous story, ‘ The Little Prince’. It is a super school, full of friendly, smiling faces!

  ‘OATH TO THE STARS’

In the Summer of 2003, forty Year 6 Peterbrook children performed in the beautiful town of Cholet in the Loire Valley. Our children were incredible ambassadors for their school and their country in what proved to be a memorable and emotional performance which was filmed.

The opera’s theme was to view the world through the eyes of children. The Romanian children, in Act 1, depicted the guiding influence that the stars and heavens have upon the destiny of the world. For Act 2, Peterbrook children, in a moving composition that involved such diverse formats as country and western music, calypso, and Rap, presented the ills of the world as children see them, that is as, death, destruction, war and poverty. In the final Act 3, the French children offered a hopeful solution in remembering the promise that the heavens have given the earth, and the ‘oath to the stars’ that we must give in return, to make our world a better place in which to live.

~ 'It was a performance I'll never forget, I felt so proud to be singing with other Peterbrook children at such an important event' ~
                                            Alex Pell, Year 6 girl.
