The Peterbrook Keys

The Peterbrook Crest

The Peterbrook Crest is unique to Peterbrook School. It was devised in 1963 when the first school opened under the leadership of Mr. Hughes, the school’s first Headteacher. Mr. Hughes had remained in post for 28 years, when he retired. Mr. Carter was appointed as Headteacher in 1991 and is still currently in post. The Crest itself consists of 5 components:

The Blue River
This a reference to the river that at one time ran through the area upon which the school now stands, Peter Brook, a tributary of the River Cole.

The Bridge
This represents the settlement that has evolved to what is now Solihull Lodge, where our school is situated.

The Green Countryside
Our school is very close to the countryside still. Nearly 100 years ago the land was open rolling countryside, but gradually through the century housing development has taken place. We are, however, only 400m from the countryside.

The Letters
As you would expect, the letters P and S represent the words Peterbrook and School.

The Silver Keys
The Keys are very special. They are known as The Peterbrook Keys. They represent the keys to acquiring Knowledge and of gaining Friendship, two of the most important aspects of the ethos we all strive to promote.

The ‘Peterbrook Keys’ are an important feature of our school as they encapsulate our school ethos and reinforce what we believe to be important values with our pupils. The two keys represent ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Friendship’ and the keys look down upon us everyday in our Junior Hall from a large colour representation of our school logo.

At the end of each school year the keys are removed from the school shield and are used in our ‘Year 6 Leavers Assembly’ when we present numerous awards and accolades to our departing pupils in front of their parents. Mr. Carter chooses, each year, two Peterbrook pupils from Year 5 who he feels will be excellent custodians of our keys of knowledge and friendship for the following year. These Year 5 pupils receive the keys in a ceremony with the two departing pupils from the previous year and so the cycle continues. The keys are then carefully returned to their place on the shield for the year to come.

Symbols representing the keys are everywhere to be seen in our school – on displays, letter headings, our website, Achievement Awards, etc. etc. They are a constant reminder to us all that our daily quest for ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Friendship’ is a worthy one, as we guide our pupils on their journey to adult life.
