Today we looked at energy and lighting. As a result of our meeting with Rachel from Thorn Lighting, we chose several key areas in the school that continuously use light. The places we chose were the two halls, corridors, ICT room and the year 3 and 4 classrooms who do not as yet have movement censor lights. We then completed a light audit which we will send to Rachel who will do an energy survey to tell us how we can change our lights to be more energy efficient. Mrs Edwards will send the information to Rachel once it has been typed up.

Mrs Edward reported back to the children that Mr McGaw really liked our ideas and is looking forward to hearing our findings.

Mr Rhind told us that next week he has got someone from Education ICT coming in to change the power settings to allow them to go into standby after 5 minutes of inactivity.  The children were really happy with this.

We were then introduced Rachel who was from Thorn Lighting who talked to us about what we could do to save money and electricity in our school.  She told us that although our bill will initially be high due to the money to buy the LED bulbs, we won’t have to change our bulbs as often and we will cut down on the amount of WATTS we use.  Therefore, saving money.  If we combine movement sensors with the low wattage LED bulbs, we will save even more money for our school.

She suggested to us that we complete an energy survey so that we could see what energy we are using now and how much we would save by installing new light bulbs etc.  We said that we would collect the information she needs i.e. dimensions of the room, how many lights in each ceiling and how many lamps in each light.  Rachel will then come in and complete the audit with us.  This will then contribute to the information we present to Mr McGaw.

We thanked Rachel for coming and the meeting closed at 9.30am

Today we talked about energy.  We discussed what it was and what it is used for in our school.  We also talked about why it was important to reduce the amount of energy we used.  The children thought it was really important for the environment to save energy and Mrs Edwards said that saving money would be an added bonus.

Mrs Edwards told the children that Mr McGaw would like us to be in charge of reducing our energy bills by 10% over the next year.  Mrs Edwards asked for any suggestions.  The children said that the lights in the halls should be switched off when not in use and others suggested other rooms that we could do the same, for example, the ICT room.

Mrs Edwards asked Mr Rhind if we could make the computers go on standby when not being used for short periods of time.  Mr Rhind said he would look into it.

Mr Rhind also talked to us about lighting and how much money we could save by using LED strip lights which are low in energy and having movement sensors in the corridor.  Mr Rhind said he will organise for someone to come and talk to us about lighting.

Mrs Edwards suggested that we put together a presentation on our findings and present it to Mr McGaw.  The children seemed excited about this and were happy that they were having a voice in our school.

Jade and Isabella asked if they could talk to all of the children in assembly time about what can and cannot go into the recycling boxes. They went and wrote a speech to be read out on the first Monday backs assembly.

The rest of the children were split into three groups and given a topic. They then wrote top tips for each topic to put on the website. Mrs Edwards will put them onto the website during half term.

Children welcomed and register taken

Mrs Edwards explained to the children that our green day assessors will be coming on the 27th February so over the next few weeks, we will be doing work towards the Green Flag.

Mrs Edwards explained that Mr Barton had a concern that therecycling was being put in the main bins instead of the recycling bins. One child said that she didn’t know which bin to put them into so we explained the correct bin. The children said that it is very difficult to empty the recycling boxes as a lot of trimmings, fruit cores and pencil shavings are put in there which makes it difficult to keep the carpark tidy. Mrs Edwards said that we would do an update in assembly to remind staff and pupils what to put in the bin.

Jade expressed concern that when she was tidying the P.E. cupboard, she saw some children who were not ECO councillors in the junior carpark. Mrs Edwards explained that the only children to do the litter picking were the ECO councillors but they were allowed to pick a friend to help them. Mrs Edwards reminded the children to tell the office staff when they go into the junior carpark.

The year 5 and 6 children then took the walk to school charts and worked out who needed the January badge and counted them into envelopes. They didn’t finish so Jade and Isabella came at break and lunch time to finish them off. Mrs Edwards will put them in the registers tomorrow morning.

While the year 5 and 6 children were doing that, Mrs Edwards and the other councillors talked about the ECO code and all the work we have already done for it.

Meeting closed at 9.30am.

Mrs Edwards welcomed the children and wished them a happy new year.

We started by looking at the litter picking rota and the recycling rota to check that it was still okay. Sam and Dan decided that they did not want to do litter picking at lunch time so we chose some other children to do it. Mrs Edwards will update the rotas.

Mrs Edwards handed out new walk to school charts to those who had not returned the last set. Mrs Edwards explained that the children would not be allowed to have their badges until the filled in charts had been returned.

Mrs Edwards shared the Action Plan for the Spring Term with the children. They were very excited at the thought of another Green day and were happy with the other actions. Mrs Edwards explained that we are still waiting for the assessors to come out so that we can gain our Green Flag. Mrs Edwards also said that we would be doing another assembly update very soon.

The children said that a lot of their teachers were making the effort to switch projectors off at lunchtime. Mrs Edwards suggested that when they have ICT, they make sure monitors are switched off at the end of each lesson.

The children were unsure of our ECO code so we went through it again to refresh their memory.

The children were very concerned again that it takes a long time for the taps to switch off in the junior block. They were also angry that in both the girls and boys toilets people are putting rubbish in the toilets and throwing wet tissue paper on the ceiling. Mrs Edwards said that she would talk to Mr McGaw and Mrs Thorne.

Katie and Hannah asked if Mrs Edwards could help them get their brownie Environment badge. Mrs Edwards said she would look into it.

Mrs Edwards opened the meeting by giving out the posters that they designed a few weeks back, reminding staff to turn their lights and projectors off when they are not being used.  Mrs Edwards asked for the children to stick their poster in a prominent place.

Katie was concerned that her class still didn't have a recycling box.  Mrs Edwards found one and gave it to her class teacher.

Mrs Edwards explained that there would be an ECO stall at the Christmas fayre.  There would be a 'guess the amount of seeds in Lottie' and a 'Guess the weight of the cake' competition. Prizes to be confirmed.

Mrs Edwards said that this would be an ideal opportunity to spread the message to parents and the wider community about how they can help save the environment.  The children designed posters with clear messages on, for example, have shorter showers etc.

Mrs Edwards had a couple of notices to discuss with the children.  One is that they were not to look through or keep anything that they find in the recycling boxes and also that litter picking is not to be done on the field if the grass is wet.

Mrs Edwards then discussed the Green Flag with the children and explained that in order for us to be awarded the Green Flag, we would need to show that we have helped another school on their 'ECO' journey.  Mrs Edwards told the children that we have linked up with our French school and that they would like us to send them a questionnaire to fill in.

The children spent the rest of the session thinking of questions they would like to ask the French school about what they do for the environment.

We started our energy watch today.  We designed posters to help the teachers in the school remember to switch the projectors off at lunch and home time and the lights when they are not needed.  These will be laminated and given out to each class.

Jade and Isabella wrote an update for next weeks assembl about our findings from our environmental review.

Mrs Edwards explained that there would be no ECO meeting next week but that she would collect all of the October Walk to School wall charts in and get the badges ready for when we come back.

In September, we started our 'Walk Once a Week' scheme. Today we collected all of the wallcharts and counted how many people needed a badge for walking once a week.

Caitlin assured me that her class's wallchart would be in that day and Isabella couldn't find her classes as Mr Russell is away on a residential. Mrs Edwards said that we would do 6R when they came back!

We then distributed the badges and new wallcharts for October.

Mrs Edwards explained to the children that we need to complete this years environmental review.  The children were split into 3 teams to do this.  One team did a bin and litter audit, one team went to ask the site supervisor, Mr Barton, some questions and the other team went and stuck up posters to advertise this weeks green day and harvest festival. The team who did the bin audit expressed concern that the litter was very bad in the nursery grounds so they are going to start litter picking in that area this week.

When the children returned, Mrs Edwards reminded the children that we would be collecting the walk to school charts next week and to make sure they have been completed.
