Termly Activities
Class elections at the start of this term have brought new faces to our School Council this year - congratulations to all those members who have been re-elected and a big welcome to our new recruits! Our Reception School Council representatives have joined us at the beginning of the Autumn Term for the first time.
Below you will see the 'Minutes' of our meetings for the school year and links to any appropriate web-pages which will further describe our activities. It promises to be a busy year once again as our School Council reps. deliver on their Mission Statement : 'We are the voice of our school'. 15.09.08 WELCOMES and register taken All the children were introduced to the school during assembly and were given their new School Council 'rep.' badges. All the council reps. were welcomed to the meeting and registered. Mrs. Simms was introduced to the children and she explained her role within the Governing Body. Ice-Breaking activities: with talk partner: interests, hobbies, etc. Mr. McGaw flagged up the three main School Council fund-raising activities for the year: our Big Charity Day, Red Nose Day 2009 and Hiruni Sashikala Day. In addition there would also be our annual Pupil School Improvement Conference in December.

Mr. McGaw quickly outlined the annual School Council fund-raising day in November where we raise money for the BBC Children in Need Appeal. It was agreed that Mr. McGaw would meet informally with the Chair and Vice-Chair to organise the day, prior to our next meeting.

Details: all children to pay to come to school in pyjamas and also have, class by class, Pyjama Parades and Pyjama Discos. Mr. McGaw was asked to buy 16 special 'Celebrations' chocolate box prizes for the 'best-dressed pyjama person' per class. All monies to be divided between the two worthy causes - Kirsty to tell our school bursar, Mrs. Westwood. Final details to be discussed informally bewteen councillors to get last-minute jobs done. The meeting today focused on end-of-term activites and it was suggested (by Demia) that we ask all pupils to make Christmas cards for our sponsored child in Sri Lanka - Hiruni Sashikala. It was agreed that we ask member of staff, Mrs. Gunawaradene to send our Christmas card package to Hiruni. Another cheque was agreed for £60.00 to be sent immediately to Hiruni and her family.
Discussion also focused on the need to resite our School Council display board from the junior building corridor into the infant building entrance so that our infant pupils could easily keep-up-to-date with our activities. Mr. McGaw was asked to speak to infant staff about this. Mr. McGaw outlined the following day's 'Pupil School Improvement' Conference when he, and Mrs. Burke, would support all the delegates (ie. School Councillors, Peer Mediators, House Captains) in their meetings and workshops. Please click here to view the Conference itself. The last few minutes were spent discussion class council issues, eg. drinks fountain leaking, outdoor play equipment needs improving (Mr. McGaw to speak to PTFA member Mrs. Cartwright and report back at the next meeting).

The school council meeting for today was taken up mostly with items from Class Council meetings. Firstly however Mr. McGaw reported back on the success of the 'Pupil School Improvement' Conference and that the six final recommendations from the pupils had been forwarded into the Staff School Improvement Conference on 5 January - watch this space! Mr. McGaw then reported back that the PTFA we pleased to have had communication with the School Council re: outdoor playground upgrading of equipment and that they were collecting brochures for the PTFA members and School Council members to have a look at - more to follow.
Mr. McGaw reported back that the new School Council display board would soon be sited, to the right wall, as you enter the infant building. Also the leaking water fountain in the Y3-Y4 corridor has been fixed. New issues included the low number of boys participating in becoming Peer Mediators and also how the girls out-enrolled the boys in extra-curricular clubs by nearly 3:1. It was decided to come back to this issue next time.

The meeting today was a packed one because we had missed a meeting due to snow closing the school on 2 February. Members were quickly brought up-to-date regarding the preparations for the two major School Council fund-raising events this term:'RED NOSE DAY' in conjunction with the Peterbrook 'Big'n'Baggy' Fund-Raising Day on 13 March - in 4 days and 'HIRUNI DAY' on 31 March!! Quick voting was done on several issues eg. RED NOSE DAY: non-uniform and to come into school wearing very big and baggy clothes - Mr. McGaw to ask Mrs. Hunt (Lunchtime Supervisor) if she would assist on the day and also Mrs. Cartwright (PTFA member). Sponges to be bought by Mrs. Dev and cut into circles by Miss Thompson - Mr. Barton to cut the MDF boards (x2) to size and Mr. McGaw to draw 20 animals on huge sheets of white card (2.5m by 1.5m x2). Councillors to help with painting the 'red-nose' animals on the day as each class comes into the junior hall dressed in baggy clothes for painting and disco-dancing!! All funds to go to BBC Red Nose Day 2009. TARGET: £400!! Click here to view how the School Council event unfolded on the day!! HIRUNI DAY: Mr. McGaw to ask Mrs. Gunawaradene if she can come to the special Hiruni Day assembly - non-uniform day with all money to go to supporting Hiruni's education and family life - amazing drawings and photographs have been received from Hiruni of her new school, new teacher, new school equipment, new shoes, etc. Mr. McGaw to arrange the special assembly with School Council members assistance. Our councillors report back on their fabulous Red Nose Day 'Big'n'Baggy' Day and were delighted that our target was met .... just!! We raised £401.00!! Also our other School Council event on 31 March was a massive success as £406 was raised for Hiruni Sashikala!! Click here to view how the School Council event unfolded on the day!! Also it was reported to councillors that our PTFA have decided to re-focus their fund-raising on upgrading the outdoor play equipment and that they have set themselves a target of £12,000 to raise over the next school year.

Our re-arranged meeting hav four main items on the agenda:
- to consider joining 'School Councils UK' a national body overseeing the interests of all school councils: see www.schoolcouncils.org - the literature was distributed for discussion and it was agreed to proceed with the application next meeting
- to consider the request from Solihull's 'Children and Young People's Trust' to complete an on-line questionnaire that would further improve services for young people in Solihull - the councillors agreed to do this, again at the next meeting
- fund-raising opportunity: to create our own school 'Healthy Cookbook': sample cookbooks from 'The Cookbook Initiative' were distributed for discussion: see www.thecookbookinitiative.com. Everyone was keen to make this our sole fund-raising activity for Summer 2. Megan asked Chloe and Isaac to lead on this with Mr. McGaw
- councillors were informed that we will be having an Ofsted Inspection tomorrow and that they need to relax and not 'dry-up' like they did in 2006!!

Healthy Schools status: Mr. McGaw outlined the current position in relation to Peterbrook's renewal as a 'Healthy School'. The idea of a tuck shop was discussed and also the need to re-define what is acceptable as a snack at Break Time. Megan felt that fruit and 'Go Ahead' cereal bars would be acceptable and that perhaps children could pay in advance for their healthy snacks. Also suggested that perhaps the Breakfast Club staff could run the tuck shop? Mr. McGaw to report back at the next meeting.
Hiruni Sashikala: Sri Lanka Project: Mr. McGaw opened the discussion on whether or not another child could be included in our 10 year sponsored education project. All councillors felt that we needed to contact Mrs. Gunawaradene (member of cleaning staff) to ask her to liaise with the Lions Club in Paddukka about the possibility of a little boy joining the project. Also the financial arrangements for paying Hiruni were discueed again and the following were agreed by voting 14-0.
Payments:
Every September: £60 to Hiruni and £60 to a new child
Every December: £60 to Hiruni and £60 to a new child
Every March: £60 to Hiruni and £60 to a new child
Every June: £60 to Hiruni and £60 to a new child
It was agreed to have 'Hiruni +1 Sponsorship Day' every April. The June payment is to be sent immediately. Mr. McGaw was asked to speak to Mrs. Gunawaradene to begin the selection of another sponsored child. Mr. McGaw to report back as soon as possible.
Peterbrook Healthy Cookbook Project: It was unanimously agreed by voting 14-0 that the cookbook project would be undertaken at the start of September as the new Council's first job.

Hiruni Sashikala Project update:
- Kirsty (Treasurer) will check that June's £60 for Hiruni has been sent to the Lions Club in Paddukka
- Mr. McGaw reported that Mrs. Gunawaradene has been informed that a little boy in Hiruni's village has been found who will now join the project. No name or details have been given yet but this information will arrive in time for our next meeting. Councillor Ben said that this made hime feel really 'excited' and Councillor Louise felt very 'proud' that she was involved in such an activity. Once details have arrived, Kirsty will ensure that the June £60 is sent to our new child before the end of term.
- Minutes of Meetings: Mr. McGaw asked all councillors to please read the minutes of the last meeting on the school website every time. 'Reading minutes is an important part of being a School Council representative,' he said. All agreed to do this.
- Creative Arts Week: Mr. McGaw discussed the 'Name the Seal' competition for the Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning Mosaic to be mounted in the Junior Hall. The School Council are to be given 6 names to choose from the 200+ suggestions that have been given to Miss Pearce. More to follow.
