Borough Sports – Day 1 – Wednesday 22nd June 2016
Today, on a glorious summer evening, our talented Peterbrook athletes took part in the first day of competition. We had a number of different athletes competing in a variety of events, which included the Javelin, Long Jump, 75m sprints and the 600m run. The event was attended by 32 schools in the Solihull area (The biggest turn out they have ever had).
I’ll begin with the Long Jump, where Gema flew for 2.50m, with Sam going that bit further and breaking the 3m barrier at a total distance of 3.03m. Next came the Javelin, with Cassius and Ella both performing brilliantly. Cassius managed to throw himself into 5th place and Ella 6th Considering there were about 30 athletes competing, this was a fantastic achievement!
The 600m was next and we had two athletes competing; Josh for the boys and Ella for the girls. They both ran their socks off in their semi -finals, with Josh finishing 3rd in his race and qualifying for the final, which is to be held on a later date. This means that he is one of the top 10 boys in Solihull at the 600m. Fantastic running! Ella, who is only in Year 5, was running against all the girls from Year 6 and ran so well, finishing 7th in her race out of 15 and only just missed out on the final. Great effort!
Now, I’ll move on to the 75m Sprints, where we had Millee who ran for the Year 5 girls. She had a very quick heat and finished in 4th place, which only just missed out on a semi-final place. Zak and Cameron both ran for the Year 5 boys, with Zak finishing 4th and like Millee, unfortunately missed out on a semi-final place. However, Cameron finished 2nd in his heat and made the semi-final. He later ran in the semi-final and really found his confidence; winning the race comfortably and qualifying for the final, which like Josh’s 600m race will be held on a later date. Brilliant running Cameron!
The Year 6 boys were next, and we had Harry and Sam running. Harry was in a quick heat and he finished in 5th place in an extremely close finish, so he just missed the semi-finals. Sam also ran in a very close heat, but he dipped his head at the line at the right moment, which helped him to win the race! He took part in his semi-final later on and competed so well but unfortunately finished in 5th place, so has not made the final. A super effort, Sam!
Now, we move on to the Year 6 girls, where we had both Lauren and Keira running for us. Lauren ran first and she won her heat very comfortably and cruised into the semi-finals. Keira was up next, but was neck and neck with another athlete and she finished in 2nd place, but this was good enough to make the semi-final too! They were both in the same semi-final and it was an incredibly fast group of 8 girls. Keira finished in 7th place, while Lauren finished in 3rd, meaning that she qualified for the final, which will be held on a later date! Excellent effort girls!
The 75m sprints had a total of 8 heats for each of the 4 different groups, meaning there were 64 athletes competing in each of the Year 5 boys, Year 5 girls, Year 6 boys and Year 6 girls groups. This means that Sam and Keira both made the Top 16 in Solihull and that Lauren and Cameron have both made the Top 8 in the borough! Let’s also not forget Josh, who is in the Top 10!
An outstanding first day of competition from all of our Peterbrook athletes! I’m very proud of you all!
