3E Spring

Happy Easter to all of 3E and their parents!  Have a great holiday - you deserve it!

 

Week Ending: 18th March 2016

 

Wow this week has been both busy and exciting! Thank you so much for attending the parent’s information evening, it was lovely to see you all and celebrate your child’s successes!

 

This is what we have been learning about:-

 

We have finished our IPC topic on ‘The Human Body’ this week and have looked at food groups and what each group does.  We then used it to design our own healthy menu.  We talked in great detail about eating a balanced diet and things like cakes and chocolate were okay in moderation!  We also talked about what can cause damage to our bodies, in particular, alcohol and smoking. 

 

In maths, we have been learning about time and the children are finding this very difficult.  We have learnt about telling the time in 5s, for example, 5 past 3, 25 to 4 etc.  They are fine with past but get confused with to!  We then moved onto telling the time using roman numerals (!!) and finished off by looking at the 24 hour clock.

 

In English, they have written a first draft of a story, edited it and then wrote the final draft.  They are getting really good at editing and are accepting it as an important part of the writing process.  Their stories were brilliant and many were using inverted commas, paragraphs, fronted adverbials and a lot more.  They are slipping slightly with capital letters and full stops, so if they do any writing at home, please correct their mistakes in terms of punctuation.  We then made ‘bird cakes’ and wrote instructions for them.  Here we are putting them on the trees!

As you are aware, on Thursday, it was sports relief and the children completed many activities!  We had a dance off, an obstacle course and the 1 mile run or for me the 1 mile walk/crawl to the end!  Here are some photos and videos of the day!  Please remember to sponsor the children.  You can use the following page: https://my.sportsrelief.com/sponsor/peterbrook

Finally, to finish the week, we had a planetarium come and visit us and it was pretty amazing.  We looked at where astronauts live in space, what all the stars were called and a video about dinosaurs!  It was so realistic!

Week Ending: 26th February 2016

 

This is what we have been learning about this week: -

 

In English we have started our topic on ‘Writing for Real: Fur and Feathers’.  The children have been given the task by a publishing company to write a non-chronological report on an animal or bird from Africa and the Antarctic.  They have had to do some research on their chosen animal, then write their first draft and finally on Friday they edited their work.  This week they will write up their final draft before starting on their next project.

 

In Maths, we have looked at data handling where they answered questions based on a line graph and a bar chart, they have looked at the difference between parallel and perpendicular lines and finally, they looked at turns of a right angle anti clockwise and clockwise.

 

In IPC, we have started our topic on ‘The Human Body’ and have been looking at parts of the eye and the function of those parts. We have also looked at shadows, how they have been formed and finally what happens to shadows throughout the day.

Half Term Challenge

 

Write down a list of animals or birds that can be found in Africa and the Antartic ready for our English topic!  Every child who brings me a list will get 3 house points!  Happy internet surfing and remember to KEEP SAFE!  Tell an adult if you see anything that worries you.

This week has been such a busy week!  We have loads to share!

 

Fit4Schools came in on Friday and did a session with the children!  They worked very hard and were out of breath by the end but had loads of fun!

We finished our topic on 'Bright Sparks' this week where they designed and made a room out of a house.  They decorated it and added a working light bulb to it which they were very excited about!  They all did a superb job!

It was internet safety day on Tuesday.  We spent the morning thinking about the internet and how we should keep safe.  The children learned a lot from it, especially the fact that they should tell an adult if they see anything that makes them feel uncomfortable or that is making them upset.  We talked about cyberbullying and about not trusting everyone on the internet, for example, people might not be who they say they are.  The children struggled to understand this concept but hopefully they do now as they are such trusting children - which is no bad thing!  We made posters to tell others how to keep safe.

In RE last week, the children were learning about special clothes that different people wear.  The children dressed up in their clothes and told the class about them.  Thank you Mrs Basim for coming in!

Week Ending: 5th February 2016

 

Just a reminder that it is ‘Times Table Tuesday’ every Tuesday so we need those books in by then, Homework is due in on Wednesday and reading books should be in daily.  I know that usually I read with the children on a set day but sometimes this can change.

 

This is what we have been learning about this week:

 

In English we have been learning about riddles.  The children have had great fun doing these and are enjoying the challenge of writing me a riddle to solve.

 

In maths, we have been learning about multiplication and it is clear that a lot of the children still need a lot of work on the basic tables.  Most have them have understood the process of working out multiplication using the formal written method but have made mistakes due to not knowing their tables.

 

In IPC, we have finished our science unit of work on electricity and have moved onto our design and technology topic.  The children have been set the challenge of designing a room of a house and adding a light and a buzzer to it (at a later date!).  Watch this space for photos of their final products!

 

Week ending: 29th January 2015

 

This is what we have been doing this week:

 

  • In English we have been writing Kenning poems.  These are poems that have two words per line and contain a noun followed by a verb ending in er or ing. The poem has no title as the reader has got to try and guess what it is.  For example:

 

Web-spinner

Fly-eater

Person-scarer

Silk-maker

 

At first sight, the children thought these would be so easy to write but after attempting to write them, soon changed their minds!

 

  • In maths we have been reading scales using different measures: weight in kg and g and capacity in ml and l.  The children have found this quite difficult, especially knowing that 2.4L is 2400ml.  We have also added and subtracted amounts using the formal written method.

 

  • In IPC we have been learning about magnets, what they are and how they attract or repel.  We have also learned about the dangers of electricity in the home.

Week Ending: 22nd January 2016

 

For the past two weeks, this is what we have been learning about:-

 

In English we have been continuing our work on poetry.  We have looked at shape poems and acrostic poems.  The children have thought hard about poetic devices they could use and have successfully written both types of poem using similes and alliteration.  We are really trying hard to better ourselves with the vocabulary they use.  They are gathering ideas and then editing their work to see if they can use better words.  If they do writing at home, challenge them to better themselves!

 

In Maths, we have been focussing on addition and subtraction, specifically using the written column method.  The children are often getting confused as to whether they regroup or exchange.  Please see the autumn Class page for how we teach it if the children do this at home.  We have also been counting back in tens and the children are really struggling with crossing the boundaries.  What I mean by this is that if we have 423 and we count back in tens, they find it difficult when it gets to 403 and what comes next.

 

In IPC we have had fun with circuits!  The children now know what a conductor and insulator is and they can set up circuits with 1 bulb, 2 bulbs and a buzzer.  They are doing really well with this!  We have also talked about the dangers of electricity and the problems with the environment!

Week Ending: 8th January 2016

 

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all!

 

Please note the new homework changes in the letter that was sent home last Tuesday.  I have attached a copy of this letter below.

 

This week has been a busy week as always and this is what we have been learning: -

 

In English, we have started our new unit of work on poetry where we are looking at different types of poems.  We have focused on list poems this week and the children have had great fun making up silly poems!  They found it quite difficult to create rhyming couplets but most achieved it by the end of the week!  If the children want to look at other list poems, there are plenty of examples on the internet.

 

In Maths, we have been looking at fractions.  We have been focusing finding 1/5, 1/3, 1/4 of a quantity, counting forwards and backwards in tenths and knowing that  tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10 .  See the power point below for more information on this.
