A BIG welcome to our 3E class page!
I am going to try my very best to update this page regularly to let you know what we have been doing each week!
Week Ending: 1st December 2017
In Geography we have created our own map and written our own key. We discussed why it was important to have a key. We then looked at grid references on a map and learned how to use them.
In Computing, we learned how to log on to our email, open an attachment, send an email and attach a document. They were very excited that they had an email from Paddington!
In PSHE, we have continued our work on ‘Celebrating Differences’ and looked at the saying ‘Sticks and stones may break our bones but names will never hurt you.’ We discussed how this is not true as names can really hurt your feelings.
Also, Christmas has arrived in our classroom and the children have had fun decorating the tree!
It is our last swimming lesson next Thursday (7th December)
It is our Carol Concert on the evening of 12th December at 6pm. Please ensure your child is present.
Week Ending: 24th November 2017
In Geography we have looked at what countries make up the United Kingdom, we then we looked at some of the counties in the country and what cities we find in each county. We then worked in pairs to research the human and physical features found in particular counties.
In JIGSAW, we focussed on bullying again and discussed what a bystander was and how they could help in a situation where someone was being bullied.
In French, we looked at positional language and completed a sheet explaining where a girl and a boy was in relation to an object. They did really well with this.
Week Ending: 17th November 2017
In Geography we have used the research we completed last week to write a non-chronological report on our chosen country. They did a brilliant job and now know lots of information of either Brazil, Canada or Spain.
In JIGSAW we have looked at what a bully is and how we can help someone that is being bullied. This fit in beautifully with anti-bullying week.
Obviously today is Children in Need day and I would like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you for your donations you have given. The children have had a great day and we have raised lots of money!
Week Ending: 10th November 2017
In Geography we have worked in pairs and have completed research on Brazil, Spain or Canada. They have researched human and physical features, climate, currency, traditional foods, language, fun facts and much more. Next week the children will be writing a non-chronological report on their country.
In computing we have started a new topic on ‘Exploring the Internet’. This week looked at how the internet works in terms of what happens when we search for an image. They were amazed at how complicated it was and that it still only takes a second for us to get a picture! We also looked at old computers and what they were like compared to today’s computers. I felt very old during this lesson when they didn’t know what a floppy disk was! Ha Ha!
In French we have been learning about what you find inside a pencil case and have completed an activity on this.
In PSHE we have looked at conflict within families and at school and that is perfectly normal for adults to have disagreements and for siblings and friends to have them too. We have learned that it is only a problem when it happens a lot or when it causes us to be unsafe. We have looked at the solve it together technique to help us sort out our own problems rather than relying on adults. I have put a copy of the ‘solve it together’ poster below so that you can use it at home if you wish. We also worked as a team to spell out certain letters. We worked out that together they made the word ‘FAMILY’
Week Ending: 3rd November 2017
We have had great fun in English this week starting our new topic on being Journalists of a Teddy Bear magazine. We started off by going on a bear hunt (luckily for us they were not real!)
In Geography we have started our new topic on 'Gateways to the World'. We looked at the questionnaires that were sent in and mapped on a world map all the connections we had with the world. We learned that we needed a key so that we knew what each symbol on the map meant, for example a knife and fork was used to represent the origins of the food they liked. We were amazed with the links we had with the world even if we hadn't left the country.
Later on in that lesson we labelled the continents, oceans, some countries, the equator and the northern and southern hemisphere on a giant world map. The children did really well at this.
Week Ending: Friday 13th October 2017
Science - this week we finished our science invesitgation on soil and noticed that soil is made up of many things which could be seen in layers. We also looked at fossils and how they are formed.
Computing - we had great fun this week filming our News Report against the green screen! Thank you to Mr Crathorne for helping us with this!
Week Ending: 6th October 2017
Science – this week we have looked at the different properties of rocks and have looked at why certain rocks are better for certain activities. For example, slate is good for roofs as it is able to be cut into layers and is strong. We then looked at soil – exciting I know! Weirdly the children loved it! They felt the soil, looked at it using magnifying glasses and then noticed that when we added water to it, there were bubbles at the top. We talked about how this meant that air was present in soil and discussed why it was important. We started off an investigation into what will happen when the water is left to settle. Hopefully next week we will see the different layers in soil! Watch this space!
Computing – this week we wrote our scripts for our news report. We are already to start filming next week!
French – this week we looked at positional language, for example, devant means in front of, dans means in etc.
In PSHE, we completed some team work where we designed and made carrot cars then raced them! The children had great fun with this!
Please remember it is parents evening next week and that the appointments are for 10 minutes. I apologise in advance if I run over. Finally, we are trying something new this year where both members of each year group are in the same room. Therefore, our appointments will be held in 3A.
Week Ending: 28th September 2017
Science - we finished off our unit of work on light by completing an investigation on shadows. We investigated what happened to the shadow when the light source and object where moved close to each other. We found out that the shadow gets bigger because it is blocking more of the light. We then started our new unit of work on rocks and despite this seeming like a very dull topic, the children have really enjoyed feeling different types of rocks, sorting them and identifying what they are called.
Music – we have continued our work on ‘Let your spirits fly’ and have tried to play some of this using a glockenspiel whilst at the same time looking at pulse and rhythm.
Computing – this week we looked at the different camera angles and shots. If you would like to know more about these, here are the links to the videos that we watched.

PSHE (Jigsaw) – last week we learned what a nightmare school would look like so this week we looked at what a dream school would look like. We then compared the two and started to think about what our rights are in school but equally important what our responsibilities are. (We didn’t manage to do JIGSAW last week so this is a continuation.)
Here are some photos of our week including some maths photos of us using dienes to add numbers using the column method.
Week Ending: 22nd September 2017
We have had another fabulous week! Here is what we have been learning about. Please see the maths and English page for those updates!
Science – in science we have continued our work on light. We have looked at the eye and labelled it and then described what each part does. For example, the iris is the coloured part and controls how much light is let into the eye. We then looked at what material would be best for curtains. We talked about the terms translucent, transparent and opaque and the children thought a material that was opaque would be the best! We then completed an investigation and tested different materials, recorded their results and analysed them. This was their first big investigation and they did brilliantly!
Computing – this week we read a fractured story on the three little pigs where the wolf told his side of the story. We decided that our movie was going to be based on a news report. We then created a story board for this.
French – we learned how to say hello, goodbye, say our name and ask how people are. We started learning a song on this.
Music – we continued our unit called ‘Let your Spirits Fly’ and have looked at what rhythm and pulse means; what R&B is and learned a new song.
PSHE (Jigsaw) – last week we learned what a nightmare school would look like so this week we looked at what a dream school would look like. We then compared the two and started to think about what our rights are in school but equally important what our responsibilities are.
We had a fantastic week with remembering stuff! The majority of us remembered our ties table books and spellings on Monday, everyone remembered their reading book and most handed in their homework. What a great start – I think it is the best start we have ever had! Keep it up!
Just a little reminder to remember to sign their reading diaries to say they have read their library book as well as their school reading book.
Week Ending: 15th September 2017
We have had a great first week. This is what we have done:-
Swimming – we had a great time swimming and the children are looking forward to next week. Just a reminder that they will need a swim hat if they are a girl. They were allowed to borrow them this week but will not be able to next week. Jewellery is not allowed which means that they will not be able to swim if they have earrings in.
Science. – we have started our new topic all about light. We have looked at the difference between a light source and a light reflector and we have investigated what material would be best to wear at night and found out that we should definitely have light reflectors on our clothes if walking in the dark.
PSHE - we have learned how to face new challenges positively, make responsible choices and ask for help when needed. Also we have been able to recognise how it feels to be happy, sad or scared and how to recognise if other people are feeling these emotions. We have thought about what a nightmare school would look like and how that would stop us being able to learn.
Computing – we have looked at chroma keys today which is another word for green screening. We have watched videos to show what they are and when they and how they work. The children are really looking forward to creating their own movies using a green screen.
Below are some photos from this week.
Week Ending: 8th September 2017
We have had a fantastic first few days in year 3 and the children have settled in really well. This week we have been learning about how year 3 works and all of the rules and routines we have. We have completed our first 'JIGSAW' lesson and Music lesson which the children both enjoyed!
In PSHE (Jigsaw) we wrote down something that we were proud of achieving so far and on the medal (see photos below), we thought of a goal we wanted to achieve this year and drew a picture of ourselves achieving it. On the back we wrote down words of how we would feel when we achieved it.
Just a few reminders for next week:
- We will be doing PE first thing on Monday morning so please make sure that PE kits are in.
- Swimming starts next Thursday. Please temember that the girls will need a swim hat.
- Parents information evening is next Tuesday
